At the youthful age of 14, Quantell did not have a chance to live out his dreams. Senseless gun violence took away his future. We’ve learned that more senseless gun violence disrupted mourners of Quantell Braxton at a peaceful vigil – critically injuring one and wounding another. This morning, yet another murder has taken place – yet another young life and promising future has been taken away by gun violence. None of us should have to walk through our streets in fear – our children should not view their youthful excursions around their own neighborhoods as life-or-death adventures. These recent acts of violence against our children are fateful indicators that our presence — as community leaders, local officials, neighborhood organizers, and parents – must be made more visibly apparent in the lives of our youth. We need to demonstrate by our actions that all of our children are precious. This community has shown that it can be a peaceful one. We’ve seen a dramatic decrease in the murder rate from the past year. Just two weeks ago nearly 300 people – both youth and adults – came together to agree to a community-led plan for establishing community standards aimed specifically at our youth. We hope that the perpetuator(s) of these crimes turn themselves in to the authorities and take responsibility for their actions. They also need to understand that there are many more good people in our community than there are bad, and we will weed out these bad seeds with the help of authorities. Again, our prayers go out to all of the families who are grieving and who are now themselves victims of violence. Your hurt is felt by all of us. My message to whoever it is making that split-second decision to shoot – Stop killing our hope for the future!
