In iedere relatie komen spanningen, ergernissen en ruzies voor; dit is normaal en hoeft niet te duiden op een ongezonde of falende relatie. Wanneer partners echter in hun relatie tegen problemen oplopen waar zij zelf niet meer uit komen, staan zij voor de keus om ofwel de relatie te beëindigen, of hulp van buitenaf in te schakelen. Indien er voor het laatste gekozen wordt kan relatietherapie uitkomst bieden. Samen met beide partners brengt de relatietherapeut de problemen in de relatie van het paar dan in kaart. Vervolgens gaat men tijdens de relatietherapie op zoek naar mogelijke oplossingen voor deze relationele problemen. Dit gebeurt doorgaans door middel van gesprekken tijdens therapiesessies waaraan beide partners deelnemen. Hieruit kunnen onder andere nieuwe omgangspatronen en betere communicatie voortkomen, waardoor de neerwaartse spiraal doorbroken wordt en de relatie weer voor beide partners bevredigend wordt. De relatietherapeut biedt echter geen kant en klare oplossingen; beide partners zullen energie moeten steken in zichzelf en hun relatie om de relatietherapie te laten slagen.Relatie problemen of relatie verdiepingVaak wordt relatietherapie ingezet als laatste strohalm: de partners staan eigenlijk al op het punt om uit elkaar te gaan, maar geven de relatie door middel van therapie nog een laatste kans.
