Here, land and water features create a natural migration corridor. Tens of thousands of birds are funneled to the Point every Spring and Fall while migrating through the Great Lakes region. For over 30 years, Whitefish Point Bird Observatory has been monitoring and documenting these annual migrations. Our mission is to document the distribution and abundance of birds in the Great Lakes Region, with special emphasis on migration. However, winds were out of the northwest which was a good thing! We started off on the observation platform by the lighthouse and enjoyed the migration from there. A few Sanderlings and a single Baird’s Sandpiper were on the beach to greet us and the Baird’s was a lifer for most people. And, for the first time in two years I started a tour without rain.Our first stop was to fill in a “want” for Warren. We stopped at Tahqua Trail and found our first interesting plant of the day – Purple-fringed Orchid. There were a few interesting sedges and our first goldenrods nearby, but little else at this first roadside stop as we were now on a mission. Our target was Forest Service Road 3344. He has accepted the position of Executive Director for the Bad River Watershed Association. Tony's last day at WPBO was May 15.The BRWA promotes a healthy relationship between the people and natural communities of the Bad River watershed, involving citizens in assessing, maintaining and improving watershed integrity for future generations.
