ARCHITECTURE A 1994 project for two houses in Crystal Palace. The ultimate "green" building - almost every roof is turfed, forming a lawn of the site. This is the scheme that the planners liked. This is the scheme that the client liked, nearing the end of construction. Terracing and railings to the balconies are still to be added. 1986 project for an extremely low energy house, using high levels of insulation, building mass and the water of the swimming pool (in the basement) for solar energy storage, and under-floor and in-wall heating coils for heat distribution and summer cooling. Heat pump used for swimming pool de-humidification, heating and cooling. This is the view from the South. Ground floor rooms facint the terrace are protected by the conservatory and window collectors with solar water heating panels above. Other windows are protected from summer overheating with overhanging eaves. 1982-1988 - Our own garden. The summerhouse is double-glazed, with insulated heavy mass rear walls and floor, facing due South for maximum solar access. The photovoltaic panel on the roof powers the pump that circulates water around the ponds (at the bottom of the photograph), providing maximum circulation at the height of Summer when it is most needed. The conservatory at the rear is quadruple glazed and acts more as a thermal buffer to two sides of the house than as a thermal collector, but most efficient for all that. 1991 - Conservatory in Tooting. Double glazed with a vertical vent at high level at the rear for cooling in summertime. This form acts as a thermal buffer as above. 1984 - Conservatory in Earlsfield with garden shed under. 1984 photographic studio above garage in Camden. Highly insulated building runs on 3.5kW boiler. Lifting beam provides access for large furniture and sets into studio. 1985 - Two houses in Tooting, again both highly insulated and running on 3.5kW boilers. High levels of insulation, whole-house heat-recovery ventilation system and a condensing boiler give the building a National Home Energy Rating of 9.4.
