Contact Jeff Blyth (818) 244-9202 or Jeff@MeiGuanXiInc.com Latest Production: August 1, 1943 - Five Allied Bomb Groups join forces for one of the most incredible missions of World War II, OPERATION TIDAL WAVE The low-level bombing raid flown by 178 B-24 Liberators against Hitler's Romanian oil reserves was called: One of the bloodiest and most heroic missions of all time. -- Air Force War College Even during the planning and training stages, the operation was considered suicidal, but the brave crews chose to fly the 2400 mile mission anyway. Losses were staggering as the Germans knew they were coming from the moment they took off from North Africa. With no reconnaissance flights, the bomber crews had no way of knowing Ploesti, Romania was the most heavily defended city in all of Europe. The B-24s flew at tree-top level into billowing smoke and flames, between huge smokestacks, past hundreds of barrage balloons with deadly steel cables, and into the teeth of withering anti-aircraft fire and FLAK from hundreds of German emplacements. As the intricate plan went horribly awry, crews had to choose between abandoning their mission or flying directly into the onslaught -- made worse by exploding bombs from earlier waves of bombers. Many B-24 crews tried to escape the swarm of 150 German fighters by escaping through cornfields at fence-post level. Some of those who made it back to safety still had cornstalks in their bomb bays. The crippled aircraft returned with battered fuselages, torn wings blackened by soot and punctured by holes too numerous to count. A total of 54 Liberators were shot down and 514 men were killed or captured in this, the greatest air-ground battle ever fought. How heroic was it? The D-Day landings resulted in the awarding of three Congressional Medals of Honor. Every one of the 1728 men who flew on Operation Tidal Wave was decorated with the DFC and FIVE were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, the most of any action in American warfare.
