Apart from the fact that it would have been better not to have this need anymore, you will also have to think of the fact that paying for care home can be quite expensive. Depending on the area in which your care home will be located, you should expect to pay anything from around L450 to almost L600 for care home without nursing and from around L600 to more than L800 (close to L900 even) for care home with nursing. Avoiding care home fees is possible, but you will first have to understand the basic mechanism that sustains this entire system. Basically, once you have been appointed as needing care home (either for an extended period of time or for a limited period of time) your assets’ value will be calculated and everything will be taken into account. If your assets’ value is lower than L23,250, you will be able to receive some sort of help from the state with paying your care home fees and you will end up paying L1 for every L250 that is part of your assets. Furthermore, if your capital is lower than L14,250, you will have to pay only a smaller sum of money that can go up to a maximum of L23.90/week. If your capital is larger than L23,250 you will most likely have to pay for your care home fees yourself. Selling your main asset – your house – is the most commonly encountered option here, but not the most fortunate one too. Social Services will be able to help you for up to 12 weeks from the moment you have put up your house to sale, but only if your capital (not taking into consideration the value of the house) is lower than L23,250. avoiding care home fees is only possible if you put your assets into a trust. Doing this will exempt them from being calculated as part of your capital, which will therefore account for help received from the state. If you do decide to do this though, make sure that you are not trusting people that are unreliable and that you do not trust yourself into any kind of “fishy” schemes.
