Storing Your Vacuum Cleaner
Before you simply shove your new vacuum cleaner into the back of the broom closet, read on for the best ways to store it. Despite the fact that these machines come in a number of different shapes and sizes, it really makes very little difference whether your’s is a canister one or an upright one at all. (Although upright vacuum do take up less floor space, they need more vertical space and this must be kept in mind. 
First and foremost you will have to take a decision as to whether to store the cleaner in the box it came in or not. Placing it in its box can have advantages – it is easier to store and less likely to get damaged. It also will not get as dusty whilst it is in storage. The disadvantage is in having to haul it out of its box at the end of the day when you need to use it. Personally, 
I prefer a more practical approach – create a wooden box frame that the cleaner can easily and simply be rolled into and out of. The reason for the wooden frame is to protect the machinery and hoses, if applicable. What makes this an even better idea is that you can then also store stuff on the top of the frame without worrying about whether or not it will damage anything. 
Before you store the machine, it is a good idea to give it a good wipe down inside and out. If there is a removable filter, remove this and keep in a sealed plastic bag to keep it clear of dirt and humidity. Check the undercarriage and make sure that there is nothing caught up in the rollers or adhering to the brush. 
Next up, look to the power cable – if it does not retract into the machine’s housing, coil it neatly and tie with a cable tie or piece of ribbon/ string. This will keep the cable from falling out and creating a mess. It also keeps it safe. 
If you have a canister vac, you need to disassemble the hose and the accessories. These can be washed using tepid water and a bit of soap. Place your machine in the box frame while the hose is drying. Allow the hose to dry completely before storing – make sure that nothing is stored on top of them.
