Online Course Seeks to Educate World about Sustainable Food, Energy Issues February 21, 2013 - A free online course is being developed at UC San Diego and UCSD Extension, led by Steve Mayfield with the support of Google, to educate students and anyone else around the world with a computer and an Internet connection about the challenges and potential solutions for meeting the global demands of food and fuel in the 21st century. Further information is available on the FF21 website. 2013 EDGE Biofuels Certificate Scholarship Applications due March 3! Based on the Biofuels Science Technician Certificate offered through the CA Department of Labor funded EDGE grant, SD-CAB and UCSD Extension are launching two Specialized Certificates in Biofuels. One will be fully online, while the other will include an online portion, followed by a short intensive summer lab in La Jolla, CA. Applications are now open and scholarships are available. The second round of scholarship applications are due March 3 for a spring quarter start. Algae Fuel Could Help Solve The Navy’s Oil Dependence Thursday, January 17, 2013 By Tom Fudge SAN DIEGO — When Captain Jim Goudreau describes the U.S. Navy's goal of cutting in half its use of fossil fuels by 2020, he uses words like “daunting” and “challenging.” Goudreau is director of the Navy’s Energy Coordination Office. And another word he uses to describe the goal is “necessary.” He said the navy needs to end its heavy dependence on petroleum. "And sometimes we buy it from counties that may or may not have the same interests as us. But we need the fuel to operate,” he said, adding that it would be “prudent” to develop a domestic source that gives the Navy assured mobility. (Read more...)
