REACH is a regulation of the European Union, adopted to improve the protection of human health and the environment from the risks that can be posed by chemicals. REACH is considered to be one of the most complex EU regulations which enterprises within the EU/ EEC have to comply with. The related tasks for SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) can be considerable. ARGE has made it one of its priorities to support manufacturers of building hardware in successfully mastering selected REACH challenges. Use of nickel for keys. Since Q1/2017 ARGE has been lobbying against the proposal of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) to restrict the use of nickel in keys. Recently, the European Commission and ECHA decided to discontinue the preparation of a guideline which would have extended the presently existing restriction of the use of nickel. As a result, the threat that nickel would be restricted for the use in keys is averted for the time being. Read more about the success story ‘Nickel Guideline’. The heavy metal lead (Pb) and building hardware. On 27th June 2018 the heavy metal lead (Pb) was added to REACH’s ‘Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern for authorisation’ (‘Candidate List of SVHC’). As lead is used in alloys of which various components of building hardware (and in some cases the products themselves) are made of, certain duties and obligations under the REACH Regulation became relevant for a considerable number of manufacturers of building hardware. ARGE prepared a recommendation on how to comply with the related requirements. Read more about ARGE’s recommendation concerning lead being on REACH’s Candidate List of SVHC’.
