October 17, 2013 in Misc. | No comments In my world, time was a convenient excuse for why I couldn’t exercise or write. No matter how tightly I pack things into my day there just wasn’t room for either activity. Justifications for not exercising or writing are easy. The recovery with my knee surgery has taught me to make time for exercise every day. With the things I want to do once I’m healed (taekwondo, rock climbing, hiking in the mountains), skipping my exercises is not an option. This realization helped me prioritize and stay focused. In all honesty, I’d rather not run or spend any time on the blasted stair stepper. I’d rather curl up on the couch and write or read a good book while munching on something scrumptious. The hardest part is getting started. Once I start I move to a beat of my current mantra “Better. Stronger. Faster.” Each syllable is a motion (e.g. a foot touching the pavement, a step up on the stepper, a jump, a weight being raised or lowered). Each motion brings me closer to healing, which I still have a year of hard work to go before I have complete recovery. These lessons on making time have trickled over to my writing. When everyone in my house wakes up I rarely sit down to rest because there is so much to do. I want a career as a fiction writer and right now the only way I can make it work is to get up at 5:30 in the morning. Getting up before 7:00 is not among my favorite things to do. I’d rather stay snuggled in my cozy bed and dream about fiction. Yet, skipping out on writing isn’t an option. It stops me from learning to be a better storyteller and finish my pieces. It keeps me in wishing mode instead of doing mode. So at 5:30 (I set the alarm so I can hit snooze once and not be late) my hand meets my notebook. I’m not perfect. I’ve missed days of exercising and writing. Yet in the process of prioritizing, I’m learning to accept that some days won’t be productive when weighed against the checkmarks on my to do list. But at least I’m moving forward every day and getting, “better, stronger, faster.” Writing Journal Entry October 3, 2013 in Goals, Journal | No comments It’s been awhile since I made an entry on the site. Life has been busy with school starting, family dropping in, and work projects showing up. However, that doesn’t mean I haven’t been writing. I have. By my desk I have a 90 day challenge chart that I started on August 20. I’m a visual person and for some reason having a chart by my desk that I color in is better than the computer. Anyways, my goals for the 90 day challenge are to write a minimum of 30 minutes per day 5 days per week and exercise a minimum of 5 days per week. I’m on day 45 and so far I’ve been able to write and workout 6 days per week. To make my g
