Luke 2:25-32
THE SIZE OF THE SPIRIT
For my eyes have seen your salvation,
which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel. ( vss 30-32)
Luke is the Gospel writer most concerned with the life of the Holy Spirit. In Luke’s Gospel Jesus begins his ministry by declaring that ‘the Spirit of the Lord is on me’ (Luke 4:18). In the second volume of his two-volume work, Luke tells us that the Spirit of God falls upon the believers in Jerusalem, in the great moment of Pentecost.
But now, before Jesus has said a word in Luke’s Gospel, and before the church has begun its ministry, the Spirit appears. The Spirit appears upon a righteous Jew who knows that salvation is coming but does not yet know the fullness of the gospel. Yet God’s Spirit is the Spirit that inspires Israel as well as the church—something we would do well to remember in the twenty-first century as in the first.
But when the Spirit appears, the role of the Spirit is to open up the gift of salvation so that it extends beyond Israel to be visible to all the nations, to Israel first but to the Gentiles, too. We are all tempted to make the Spirit of God too small, the exclusive possession of just a few of us. The
