Perhaps the project I am most proud of is this watch. I have taken this project from an idea in my mind, through several prototypes, and to a final product. The case of the watch is a beautiful Type II Anodized layer which effectively creates ceramic around the housing. It features a very scratch resistant sapphire crystal, handmade leather strap, and a Swiss movement.

This is a sneak peak of my senior design engineering project at Swarthmore College. What you see below is an early prototype of a lamp. Eventually, this lamp will run an ARM Cortex M4 microprocessor. Or at least that is my plan…

In the summer of 2012 I created three apps for the Windows Phone Platform. A simple tip calculator, a Nespresso recipe guide, and Zero to Sixty. Links to apps are below.

Zero to Sixty allowed the user to search any car by make, model, and trim and then displayed engine specifications and price. It sadly fell into chaos when the web service I was using to obtain the car data was discontinued. ATP Calc has been my most popular app with 1500 downloads to date and a 5 star rating.

Now that you have seen what I have done in the last four years, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Eduardo Umaña. I am from Bogotá, Colombia but I have been living in Miami, FL since 2008. I am a senior Engineering major at Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, PA. A top-ranked undergraduate program in the U.S. Engineering at Swarthmore College is a unique degree that has allowed me to explore different fields within engineering: from electrical to mechanical, and civil to industrial engineering. I have a background in Computer Science, Art and Design, as well as Business through The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
With this broad set of skills I have my eyes set on becoming a product designer. I have a passion for well made and well designed objects. I am currently working on a wrist watch and a very smart lamp–I would be happy to discuss both projects if you are curious.

Other things about me: I love coffee, a lot. I also enjoy playing lacrosse, having played for Swarthmore’s varsity lacrosse team as a midfielder. I also love German culture and can hold a conversation in German for a few minutes before I start forgetting my words. The thing I like doing the most is traveling and learning new things as I do so. My favorite object ever? My Caran d’Ache 849 fluo. This swiss-made mechanical pencil is a beautiful man made object that uses one of nature’s most useful gifts: graphite. A perfect balance that inspires my work. I could show it to you if I get the chance.
