Welcome to Manchester Southern Cemetery
This is the official website of the Friends of Southern Cemetery community group. The group is made up of ordinary people who have an interest in improving the facilities, environment and safety of the UK’s largest municipal cemetery. Working closely with Manchester Bereavement Services, the cemetery staff and the local community, the friends have already helped achieve the prestigious Green Flag award, presented in recognition of the considerable improvements made within the cemetery in recent years.
Anyone may join the Friends of Southern Cemetery. Membership is free and unrestricted. For further information please call in to the cemetery Main Office (situated by the Barlow Moor Road entrance) any time between 9 am – 4 pm, Monday to Friday, or by e-mail to friendsofsoutherncemetery@hotmail.co.uk .

CAMINADA DAY
Today, 10 March 2014, is the centenary of the death of Jerome Caminada, an extraordinary, 19th century Manchester detective who has been compared with Sherlock Holmes. His memory is kept alive by the Caminada Society, who meet regularly in the nearby Hough End Centre, and they will no doubt be commemorating his passing.

History
Opened in 1879, Southern Cemetery is situated on Barlow Moor Road, South Manchester. It is the largest municipal cemetery in the UK and the second largest in Europe, with stunning gardens and pathways, and six grade 2 listed buildings, four of which are chapels.
