Many people are allergic to the feces that they drop in our homes. A mattress or a carpet can contain thousands of dust mites. When you consider that one dust mite typically produces approximately 20 feces droppings every day and each dropping contains a protein that is a common allergen, it becomes evident why dust mites can be such a problem in homes. Difficulty: Moderate Instructions things you’ll need: Vacuum cleaner Washing machine and dryer Furniture polish (dust mite-reducing) Polish rag Dust mite bedding covers Air purifier 1 Strip all of the beds in your home and wash all of the bedding in hot water. Dry the bedding out in the sun if possible. If this is not possible, dry it in the dryer. 2 Vacuum every mattress thoroughly while the bedding is being washed and dried. 3 Encase each mattress and pillow with a dust mite cover. Consider using dust mite covers for your comforters as well. 4 Consider removing your carpets and replacing all carpets with hard flooring of some type. If you keep your carpet, have the carpets professionally steam cleaned and purchase a vacuum cleaner that is especially designed to be effective for removing allergens. 5 Steam clean all upholstered furniture. Consider the possibility of replacing upholstered furniture with leather furniture, because leather furniture will not trap dust mites and their droppings. 6 Take down all drapery and curtains and have them professionally cleaned. While the window coverings are down, thoroughly vacuum around the windows and windowsill areas. Consider eliminating these window coverings from your home. You can replace upholstered window coverings with blinds or shutters and significantly reduce the number of dust mites that live around your windows. 7 Use a furniture polish that is specifically designed to reduce allergens and dust mites when you dust and clean your home each week. 8 Machine wash all pet bedding every week in hot water. Dry the bedding in the sun if possible. If this is not possible, machine dry in the dryer. 9 Run an air purifier that is designed to remove allergens from the air.
