In 2000 it was 26,000. Last year, it was 19,000.This dramatic drop came about through a combination of vaccination programs, nutrition programs, and better water and sanitation.But we cannot celebrate until all children can share in this progress.It should anger us that most of these 19,000 children die daily from causes we know how to prevent.We have the products and the potential to save these lives. In 2000, world leaders agreed on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and called for reducing the under-five mortality rate by two thirds between 1990 and 2015 – known as the MDG 4 target. In recent years, the Global Strategy for Women’s and Children’s Health launched by United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the Every Woman Every Child movement boosted global momentum in improving newborn and child survival as well as maternal health.Since 1990, the world has cut both the rate and number of child deaths by more than one half. This progress, while remarkable, falls short of the Millennium Development Goal 4 (MDG 4) target of a two-thirds reduction in the under-five mortality rate. In 2015, an estimated 5.9 million children under the age of five will still die, equivalent to 11 every minute.
