Historic Preservation Association Of Bourbon County Kansas Letter from HPABC President After being a board member since last century (1981) and President since last century (199 5) I will step down with the April meeting. I will be happy to take care of the church for a new President. Thank you. We have new people, new ideas and l will help where I can. I hope this update finds you all doing well. In between storms we have expended all the insurance monies allowed. Larry Gaither (Triad) has worked many hours, meeting many times with Arnold, Reed, Jim, and I. Triad made a healthy contribution in dollars to help complete our mission of preserving history by repairing the storm damage to the Congregational Church and the MKT Depot. A big “thank you” to Marlene Braker, who sorted out all the money and wrote the checks. Unflappable, steadfast, cool under fire, she questioned all checks. Don’t ever get into a poker game with her! You will have to borrow money to get home! I cannot express enough my personal “thank you” to our membership for the extra money. It is allowing us to complete our mission of preserving our history. Thank you, Class of 1956 for adopting us and hope you had a great time at the reunion. As the Chinese saying goes, “Many hands make light labor.” We have a new congregation renting the Congregational Church. We hope they grow in numbers and that our partnership lasts a long time. We will be making some decisions to strengthen our board in the near future and I want to thank everyone who has helped us in labor, time, and allowing everyone to enjoy our rich Bourbon County History. I am happy to announce that the $58,000 bill for printing of the book, Historic Reflections of the Bourbon County is now paid in full, thanks to Dean Mann of Citizens National Bank (now Landmark Bank). Now, as we sell the books, the profit will go to HPA’s treasury, and will amount to about $24,000! Fred Campbell and I did not take any money as authors of the book. We had a great time and met lots of great people who visited, donated pictures, and shared a meal or two and their valuable time to make the book happen. The book is about Bourbon County by the people of Bourbon County. Fred and I were blessed. Copies are still available at the Chamber of Commerce, Landmark Bank, the Lowell Milken Center, and from me or Fred. There are 500 books left to sell. For more information, call Fred at 223-2061 or me at 223-2423. Regards, Don Miller, President Annual Meeting Highlights Early birds take their seats for the program President Don Miller conducts meeting business. It was a lively program as a very animated Bonnie Johnson talked non-stop for an hour about the aviation feats of Louise Thaden.
