The “Rajamaha Temple of Rangiri Dambulla” (also known as the “Golden Rock Temple”) is located north of Kandy, and the town of Dambulla is built around the vast rock mass, now considered by the UNESCO as a World Heritage City. The name “Dambulla” comes from the word “Damba”, meaning rock and ulla or fountain. The complexity of the caves at Dambulla has made this temple one of the most impressive in the world. The Temple is of special importance due to the numerous intricate caves within the complex, encompassing mural paintings covering an area of 2100 metres, as well as the 157 statues located throughout the caves.
