I have NubilopAcres Always A Lady and Dale has Mojave Dunes Ginny.(Once again many thanks to Melissa O'Rourke andher roving camera for the photo!)It has been three years (Spring 2011) that we completely dispersed our herd and then three months later started a new herd because I missed them way too much. We are located just south of Lincoln, being nearly in the center of the United States. We started with our original herd in September 1982 as a 4-H project for our son and daughter. Through our Nubians we have made many friends and continue to make new friends. We especially enjoy seeing our friends during the show season. We started our new herd back up with Mojave Dunes, Jowanda Nubians and Sagebrush Nubians. At the beginning of this past summer I had our herd reduced to the number we preferred to keep it at. However, one morning this late spring I received a call from Vickie with Mojave Dunes stating that she was needing to disperse her herd and offered me the opportunity to add them to our herd. She was only going to retain a couple of older does anda few bucks. With the beautiful animals we had brought back from Vickie when we restarted our herd back up it was not a difficult decision to make. We left early July to bring back the does with a return trip planned early this fall to bring back the bucks. Needless to say, come this next spring we will need to reduce our herd back down to a manageable size which will most likely be one of the most difficult decisions I will be making. We feel God has truly blessed us with a beautiful Nubian herd. My sister, Nancy, has been a huge help at shows pitching in and helping out with the care of them as well as in the show ring. She doesn’t realize just how much help she is. All of our does and bucks have been CAE negative as well as free of abscesses. Those new animals brought into our herd also come from a healthy CAE negative herd. Once all the bucks are back from California we will again be testing for CAE and checking the G6S status of our herd sires. Our kids are taken from their dams at birth and raised on heat treated colostrum and pasteurized milk even though we have a negative CAE herd. Kids are normally weaned at around three months of age and the use of Baycox (toltrazuril) is used in the prevention of coccidiosis. We find it is one of the easiest methods to use, but perhaps not the least expensive way to go once they get some size on them. The kids are also vaccinated for tetanus and enterotoxemia, dewormed at one to two months of age, and our mature animals vaccinated annually for tetanus and enterotoxemia. We also vaccinate our dry yearlings and mature does with Lysigin and J-Vac to help in controlli
