Yesterday I ordered 4 more baby hens, and will need the extra space to keep them comfortable. I found some hen house plans the other day and they should work well. I had them custom made, so I didn’t have to start all over, which should make things a lot simpler. I will also have my friend come over to help me as well. I built a hutch before, but could use the extra help since it will be bigger. The main thing I need help with is cutting out the pieces. I always have a hard time making the pieces the correct sizes, so I will be using my friend who does it for a living. He will be able to make sure everything lines up correctly. I should be finished with expanding the coop by Tuesday and will let you all see what it looks like. It won’t be anything spectacular but it will be a big improvement. Posted on May 16, 2015Categories Uncategorized Update on My Four New Hens So as I told you a while back, I got 4 more hens for my chicken farm. I just wanted to give you a quick update on how everything is going. So far, the new hens are adapting pretty well. They are getting along with my other hens and also the horse that I own. Out of the 4 only 2 started to lay eggs, but that is normal since they are in a new home. I am thinking the other two will start laying eggs within a week or two. I looked into this and this blog post said that it normally takes up to two months for new hens to start producing their first eggs. Well beside the two hens not producing, everything else seems to be going well. I am happy that I added on to my small chicken farm! I am building a new home for my hens, since I am getting 4 more chickens this weekend. I was able to find a group of plans, that were nice looking which I will be using to build the coop. They look pretty simple to build and I should be finished today. I have literally been working on it the past 5 hours and plan on working another 5 today to get it finished. I have been raising hens for over three years now, and I really love doing it. It is the main reason, I have decided to make an addition to my chicken farm. I think my kids will like it as well. I always give them the option to name the hens. They come up with fun names all the time. Usually they will name the hens after cartoon characters, which my husband and I think is so cute.
