SBLS is a program of Legal Services NYC. SBLS and NEDAP Launch Project to Assist Veterans with Student Loan Debt In partnership with NEDAP, SBLS’ Veterans Justice Project is providing free legal assistance for veterans, service members and their families who are struggling with student loan debt. Many for-profit schools aggressively target veterans, promising them quality education and vocational training, as well as job placement and career opportunities. The schools encourage veterans to use their GI Bill benefits and to take out federal student loans to cover tuition. Many schools, however, do not offer quality education or lead to meaningful jobs. Veterans who attend the schools often end up with insurmountable debt and few prospects for meaningful employment. Veterans, service members and their families in New York City can access legal advice and assistance with their student loan debt by calling SBLS’s hotline at 718 237 5564. * (Veterans) (Consumer) 3 August 2012 More Veterans spotlights > HRA Sued for Discrimination Against Transgender Client Cathy Bowman and Sonja Shield of SBLS and Dan Pepitone of Manhattan Legal Services today filed a lawsuit in New York County Supreme Court alleging that the Human Resources Administration violated New York City and State Human Rights Laws and its own procedure when it unlawfully refused to recognize a transgender woman’s gender identity and legal name and disclosed her personal information in a public setting. ...continue reading "HRA Sued for Discrimination Against Transgender Client" > * (HIV) 22 June 2012 More HIV spotlights > Lawsuit Claiming Broken Promises at Atlantic Yards to Proceed in Federal Court Nicole Salk, Latanya White, Gary Stone, and Sarah Dranoff of SBLS and Matthew Brinckerhoff of Emery, Celli, Brinckerhoff & Abady won a great victory when Judge Gleeson in the Eastern District declined to grant a motion to dismiss by Forest City Ratner and related entities in a lawsuit brought by our clients alleging that the defendants’ sham job training program at Atlantic Yards violated a number of federal, state, and city laws. ...continue reading "Lawsuit Claiming Broken Promises at Atlantic Yards to Proceed in Federal Court" > * (Employment) 21 June 2012 More Employment spotlights > SBLS's Pension Project Secures Retirement Benefits SBLS attorney Christopher Dagg wins retirement benefits for a low-income New Yorker. ...continue reading "SBLS's Pension Project Secures Retirement Benefits" > * (Pension Benefits) (Workers' Rights and Benefits Unit
