This is done by adding additional gears of various sizes that cause the output of the final gear to be reduced. How much a gears rotations are reduced varies by the number of gears inside the box. Gear reduction can have ratings between 2:1 to over 1000:1. What this means is that the input gears travel 2 times to 1000 times before the output gear travels once. This creates a highly efficient system that collects the torque power from the gears without placing undue stress on the final output gear. A properly-used gear reduction box can create a system that weighs less than 100 pounds that has an output power of over 500 pounds. This is extremely useful in industrial manufacturing and in the automotive industry.The main advantages to gear boxes include the initial reduction in speed, which makes the operation of the motor manageable. The motor uses less energy to move the machine, which leads to a longer life. The increased torque is also a benefit in many industrial and automotive applications. Vehicle manufacturers use gear boxes to help wheels with increased traction and speed on the road. The only problem with the use of gear boxes is that the speed of the motor is reduced, but the benefits usually outweigh this problem. In fact, some motors would burn out too quickly without the use of a gear box.
