Swami Sivananda Memorial Primary School The school serves the children of the under-privileged and provides free education. The Swami Sivananda Memorial Primary School was founded, by Smt. Varalakshmi Rao, in 1969 and was recognized in 1971. It is aided by the Municipal Corporation of North Delhi. The school provides free education to 372 students... Balwadi (Pre School) Bridging The Empathy Gap The ECCE or pre-school is vital. Started in 1969, the Pre-school education (ECCE) Balwadi provides free education to 110 Children belonging to families with a monthly income of Rs. 4000 or less. Children are also provided mid-day meal and stationary and health check up. Research Teaching and learning are intermediated by a large number of factors. If a child is unable to learn it is essential that the reasons for the child’s inability are enquired into. Why does a child underperform or have behavioral problems and what is their correlation with deprivation? At SSMI an interdisciplinary team consisting of a child psychologist, pediatrician and an educational counselor investigate the reasons. Each child is unique and each child needs to be investigated... Training Only a burning flame can it light another. At SSMI it is critical that all school teachers are constantly trained in teaching/life skills. External agencies are also involved like Jodo Gyan, SERVE, Bodh Shiksha etc... Advocacy SSMI believes that the purpose of providing school children a meal is to correct the widespread Child Under- Nutrition in India. Unfortunately the Mid Day Meal Scheme has been reduced to a catering programme. Its original intent and purpose as a National Programme for Nutrition Support for Primary Education must be restored... Evaluation Written examinations are an inadequate tool to evaluate the comprehension of a child. SSMI’s concern is has the child understood the concept or is it just rote learning. In association with Education Initiative, SSMI conducted an evaluation of the school children. Evaluation is a continuous process... Tool Kit SSMI has developed a self-contained tool kit for the six months teacher training for teaching per school (Balwadi) as well as first time learners under Sarva Siksha Abhiyan. The tool kit consists of a manual, a weekly and daily lesson plan. All the toys, texts, graphics and other teaching aids are contained in the tool kit...
