Most people place great value on their family, career, home and finances. These are all important, but should not supersede the value of our own health. There is a tendency to think that if everything externally is in order, then we should be able to achieve happiness. That’s why there’s need to take the time to slow down and attend to yourself. Stress Stress is that ugly little word that loves to creep up on us. It’s the mental and emotional tension that results from adverse circumstances. Not all stress is bad, though. Some types of stress are actually good for us because it gives us the drive that we sometimes need to excel. A little bit of pressure keeps us on our toes. When you are under stress, the body responds by trying to protect you. Adrenaline and cortisol are released into the blood to prepare you for fight or flight. Your heart pounds faster, your muscles tighten, and your concentration and stamina increase. This is all well and good if you’re an athlete, or need to perform at an increased level, like study for tomorrow’s exam. However, when stress becomes overwhelming, it begins to affect the mind and body. That’s why stress management is so important to overall health. Symptoms of Stress The effects of stress don’t always rear their ugly heads so suddenly. Sometimes it takes a while before you notice any symptoms of stress, or even worse, you learn to cope with it and it begins to feel normal to you. Stress affects the body mentally and physically. No two people respond the same way to the exact stressor. What highly stresses one person may only mildly impact another. Since stress is often evaluated through behavior, you can sometimes gauge your stress level by examining your behavior. Some of the common symptoms of stress are: Memory issues Lack of concentration Anxiety Negative thinking Moodiness and irritability Aches and pains Changes in appetite These are just the tip of the iceberg. Unfortunately, these symptoms are quite common and sometimes so subtle that they go unnoticed for a long time. Pampering Isn’t Just for Women Step into any kind of spa and you’ll see the same thing.
