I hope this forum will provide you with an understanding of MSU's involvement and interaction with policy makers and government on the federal, state and local level. You will also learn about the university’s commitment to the economic vitality and quality of life for the region and the state. The primary role of the office is to work with state, federal and local policy makers to ensure that funding and policy initiatives reflect the needs of our university. In addition, as one of the top 100 universities in the world, we have research and educational expertise that can serve governments and policy makers in their work. Connecting this world-class expertise to the governments at all levels is another major role for our office. Finally, research universities such as MSU are critical to the future of Michigan’s economy. Working with the President and the Provost, we focus on linking economic development teams and businesses, but in our region and throughout the state, with the assets of the university. We are strongly committed to helping the region and the state as we go through this transformation to the knowledge-economy. In the State Capitol, we are very focused on working with the new Governor and his team as they begin their work in this challenging economy. Clearly, state funding for public universities will continue to be an issue in Michigan, and we will continue to educate the Governor and new legislature to the key role MSU plays as an economic driver for the state.
