This website contains information about corporations (including LLCs) registered in the state of Washington. The information we publish is based on public records provided to us by the Washington Secretary of State (SoS). We publish the information here in the interest of making it available in a way that is accessible to the average internet user.  
Tips for researching Washington corporations 

If you're doing more than just casual research, go to the source. The corporation listings on  this website are sort of like Wikipedia. They provide an accessible and generally accurate starting point, but they're certainly not authoritative. If you need to be sure, check with the SoS. They have the most up-to-date information and are the only source that can guarantee the accuracy of the information they provide. 
For the most up-to-date information, check with the SoS. Our pages are based upon batch data from the SoS and are only updated periodically. The date of the most recent update is listed in the disclaimer at the bottom of corporation listing.  

Useful links 

EDGAR - Additional information information about publicly traded companies can be obtained by searching for their SEC filing through EDGAR. 
Research RoundUp: Business Filings Databases Updated - A very good summary of business filing information each state makes available and where to find it. This page is a good alternative to the secstates.com sites listed below. 

Sites to avoid: 

SecStates.com - If you do a search for something along the lines of "secretary of state corporation search" for any state, there's a good chance you'll end up on one the SecStates.com pages. The site is carefully crafted to be official looking, but it isn't actually affiliated with any of the secretaries of state, and the individual pages provide very little useful information. Each Secretary of State page contains some generic text, ads (of course), a link to the official secretary of state website (sort of useful), and a "custom corporation web search tool". This "custom" search doesn't seem to be custom at all. As far as we can tell, it performs a regular Google search, but, since it's via the SecStates.com website, they get a cut of the ad revenue. SecStates.com isn't a terribly useful site, but it certainly is a clever one. 

Company profile sites: 
For some companies, additional information can be found on the various "company profile" sites, like Manta. These sites seem to draw from sources other than just the state's corporation records and often include additional useful information, such as which industry a corporation is part of, revenue, and the number of employees. Because revenue and employee numbers seem to be based upon an informal, and obviously non-binding, telephone survey, you should be wary of their accuracy.
