Seventh Annual Summer Music Camp was another huge success. We had an increase in enrollment over last year; this is our goal in our quest for an area Youth Orchestra. Students, Parents and Instructors are clamoring for a two week camp. This year our Seventh Annual camp will be July 10 through 14, 2017. Donations to our camp fund might make it possible for a two week camp. Listen to Friends of WCO tell their story about what this organization is all about by clicking here. This movie was produced several years ago as a gift to WCO by Arizona Public Service. Many of the friends have moved on to new positions. The WCO director in the movie has moved on to the banking Industry and our current staff member is Kathy Kelley, a long time employee of a number of non-profit organizations. Thanks are extended to Arizona Commission on the Arts for supporting our programs with funding from the State of Arizona and the National Endowment for the Arts in the past and in the future. In recognition of our work for the community and area children, the Community Bank of Arizona (now Meridian Bank) donated the historic Garcia Little Red Schoolhouse to the WCO in the fall of 2003. The red-brick Garcia Schoolhouse was built in 1905 on land donated by Don Ignacio Garcia, considered the "father of Wickenburg education". The present building replaced a small wooden building brought from the Vulture Mine and erected in 1895. Today, the building houses a pictorial and written history of early education in and around Wickenburg. We have copies of yearbooks dating back to 1921 and many vintage photographs. Our collection includes copies of the Board of Trustees Minutes from 1884 - 1930, and written oral histories of former students of the school. There is a replica of a schoolroom from the early 1900s on display. The exhibit was created in collaboration with the Desert Caballeros Western Museum. The Schoolhouse also serves as the offices of the WCO and our music program. The Garcia Little Red Schoolhouse is on the National Register of Historic Places and is open to visitors Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm , in historic downtown Wickenburg at 245 N.
