9M2? WHO? WHAT WE DO CONTACT MENU 9M2? WHO? WHAT WE DO CONTACT creativecode +design 9M2, or nine square metres, or nine metres squared, or just nine m two. Is often said to be the minimum legal size for a habitable space in France.Chosen as a name for our company because our working (and living) space for a time was of these dimensions.On paper at least. It was actually no more than seven square metres sixty when, in a rare moment of boredom we decided to actually measure it. Such confines we found, surprisingly, to be anything but confining.Our imaginations refused to recognize the spatial restrictions.The year would turn out to be one of boundless creativity. Free from distraction, almost monastic in disposition, we experimented, analyzed and evaluated.We chose our projects carefully, deliberately.We took our time.Slowly, our work evolved, developing in alternating waves of explosive expansion and almost ascetic reduction. The name 9M2 has become a metaphor for the seed of this creative process.A small space where something new takes shape. About a year passed, and we changed premises.The larger working space was liberating, the ability to sketch out ideas freely on large surfaces embraced.A graphics tablet and stylus is a wonderful toy.A large sheet of rough paper and a soft wax crayon, also. We are based in Paris. Close to Canal Ourcq, its expanses of grey mirror flatness provide welcome rest to the eyes after long lcd hours.The ponderous walk from Stalingrad to la Villette and back has often proved invaluable if stuck creatively. We do digital design.We can be geeks.We will while away weekends learning the ins, outs and arounds of abstruse open-source software that will allow us to do something new. We embrace generative processes, allowing machines to suggest new forms. Creative stimulus comes through the systematic selection of their output. But we are historically informed. Our influences are widespread. The web, it seems to us, has formal aspects that echo other, older forms - the verticality of Kakejiku, the playful juxtapositions of Dada, the din of musique concrète, the randomness of short-wave radio.
