For me te reo is not only about language it is about inclusivity it’s about acceptance it’s about breaking down barriers, it’s about building trust, it’s about healing and it’s about treasuring this taonga we have in Aotearoa. It is unique to us existing nowhere else in the world. It should be treated like gold!We should celebrate the absolute amazingness of te reo, did you know there are 400 different ways to describe wind, 300 different ways to describe snow and 200 different ways to describe rain. There is so much more value in te reo than learning a few Māori words.Te reo is an enabler for wellness. It’s an enabler for caring.  If you have an understanding of te reo it will help you to develop a greater level of empathy and understanding of the experience of some of our whānau. You will never be able to fully understand the mate Māori – illness or sickness, or rongoā – Māori healing solutions without some level of te reo Māori. It’s also an enabler for fully participating in a cultural ceremony, te reo is the key to unlock the door to Māori culture. Some of you might not know the meanings behind names of our places here at Auckland DHB, for example Te Whetu Tawera our mental health unit. The name means the evening star. I gifted the name to represent that even in your darkest hour there will be light – Te Whetu Tawera. Many people might hear me complain when people shorten Te Whetu Tawera to Te Whetu or worse still TWT. And hopefully knowing the meaning of the words and what this represents to Māori with Mental illness people will respect the name and always call it Te Whetu Tawera.Part of the colonisation process was to devalue and take away te reo in fact Māori children were beaten at school for speaking their own language. Today all of us can help fix that.To start breathing life back into te reo at Auckland DHB, free te reo classes are available for employees and their whānau to develop te reo capability. There’s also the Āke Āke app. You can download it for free now from the App Store or Google Play Store. It’s got the basic level of intelligence or knowledge to help you work effectively in whatever roles you have in our organisation.By learning and speaking te reo Māori we can all help to right the wrongs of the past, provide a better healing environment for our whānau and value this taonga that is unique to Aotearoa.NaidaDame R.
