As of June 16, our walkers have traveled 17, 304 miles! While they didn’t quite make it around the world, they certainly traveled far and wide. This journey began in Akron and progressed to Jupiter, Florida; Roraima, Brazil; the equitorial Atlantic Ocean, Cape Verde, Africa, and concluded in Papua, New Guinea. Papua New Guinea is a Commonwealth realm, which means that Queen Elizabeth II acts as its Sovereign and Head of State. It's located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean north of Australia. It has more languages than any other country, with over 820 indigenous languages. Just a few of the mammals unique to Papua are the tree kangaroo, painted ringtail, the Papual forest wallaby and the giant bandicoot (which is really only about 11 pounds.) A macabre but kind of interesting fact is that the Korowai tribe of southeastern Papua could be one of the last surviving tribes in the world engaging in cannibalism. Michael Rockefeller, a son of then-New York governor Nelson Rockefeller, disappeared in 1961 while collecting artifacts from another Papuan tribe; his body was never found. WHY WERE WE WALKING? To illustrate that as an industry we promote employee and community wellness, ARHA member hospital employees participated in a walk “around the world” from May 15 - June 16. They walked (or other exercise converted into steps via the American Heart Association’s “My Tracker”) to attempt the goal of going around the world and completing 24,901 miles around the equator. Eight hospitals participated. WELCOME TO ARHA The Akron Regional Hospital Association began in 1936 as the Akron Hospital Council. Originally ARHA had four member hospitals and today the membership includes 21 hospitals/health systems in four Northeast Central Ohio counties. Much of ARHA's efforts in the region are a result of the thoughtful leadership of our hospitals and their ability to collaborate to develop proactive solutions to improve the health care needs of the community. Our Board of Directors and committees address common concerns to develop innovative solutions. In addition, ARHA facilitates the Northeast Central Ohio Emergency Preparedness (NECO EP) program for its 13-county region. The purpose of the NECO EP program is to enhance emergency preparedness activities in health care by meeting the deliverables as described through a grant from Health and Human Services through the Ohio Department of Health.
