Blood Groups a guide to blood types Contact Us Phlebotomy Resources Stem Cells Venepuncture Blood Groups Uncategorized 1 Response » Jan 042012 Blood Groups or Blood Types are a classification of blood in humans and other animals for the purpose of identifying the presence or absence of substances called antigens found on the surface of each red blood cell (RBC’s). These inherited antigens may be formed by a unique protein, carbohydrate or glycolipid depending upon which group is examined. These antigens are also common on the surface of other cells and tissues. There are now 30 major Blood Group systems currently recognised by the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT). The 5,300-year-old “Iceman” mummy became known to the scientific world as Oetzi. Genetic scientists have used genomic sequencing and non-invasive diagnostics to collect information to determine Oetzi’s personal history. Oetzi experienced a violent death, after an arrow severed a major blood vessel between his rib cage and left scapula. He also had a deep laceration on the hand, however it was the arrow wound and the subsequent haemorrhage which killed him. Raman spectroscopy, involves refracted light from a beam of laser light which reveals the specific elemental chemical compositions of an organic sample. The spectroscope confirmed the presence of haemoglobin and fibrin, which are key components in the process of blood clotting, at the site of the arrow wound on Oetzi’s back. DNA analysis determined that Oetzi had brown hair and eyes and was allergic to milk products. This supports a widely accepted theory that lactose intolerance was common among our early European ancestors despite the increasing spread of agriculture and the introduction of dairy animals during this time. Results have also determined that Oetzi died around the age of 45, was about 1.60 metres tall and weighed approximately 50 kilos.
