Due to issues with the 147.195 repeater, a 146.500 MHz Simplex link (88.5Hz tone) has been temporarily established under the call sign of W4ULB. It is connected via Echolink to the Georgia Conference and is currently running at 50W but that may increase soon, along with the height of the antenna. With the exception of maintenance, it should be available 24/7. We encourage everyone to try it out, see how far it reaches.
Georgia ARES is once again negotiating to install a DStar repeater in our area. It will most likely be in Woodbine on a 400+ ft tower, and tied into the statewide DStar system. Along with it, they are encouraging the re-establishment of the Camden County Area ARES. As part of thier activities, they will most likely work closely with the Camden Hospital staff of SE GA Health Systems, to train emergency communicators and set up a station at the hospital. If anyone is interested in volunteering, let us know.
Club Project - CCARS is currently taking suggestions for a simple, inexpensive, educational, and, of course, useful club project that we can start building at a meeting and then have a final project contest at the New Year Picnic in January 2017. One suggestion was a voltage regulator board that could be used as the basis for a power supply. The PC boards, schematics, and parts lists would be given out by the club, and all the parts, including transformer, pass transistors, and enclosure, would be purchased by the builder (maybe a kit of small parts could be made available at cost?). Other suggestions are welcomed, including commercially available kits. Ideas?
Several members of CCARS are currently learning about High Speed Multimedia Microwave Networks or "Mesh Nets". "Broadband-Hamnet™ (formerly called HSMM-Mesh™) is a high speed, self discovering, self configuring, fault tolerant, wireless computer network that can run for days from a fully charged car battery, or indefinitely with the addition of a modest solar array or other supplemental power source.
