He is best remembered today for his work in the Bela Lugosi Dracula, The Mummy, and The Black Cat. Carole Lombard, Katherine Hepburn, Claudette Colbert, Loretta Young, Barbara Stanwyck, Helen Chandler, Jacqueline Wells, Gloria Stuart, Joan Blondell, Kay Francis, Myrna Loy, Mae Clarke, Adrienne Ames, Ann Dvorak, Madge Evans, Ina Claire, Frances Dade, Constance Bennett, Heather Angel, Elissa Landi, Ruth Chatterton and Zita Johann were among his co-stars. When he walked away from Hollywood, he was at the height of his popularity. Never looking back or having any regrets, David lived a full and successful life. His subsequent adventures included life on the high Mojave Desert, authoring several books including two novels, making 16 MM movies during World War II, returning to acting briefly on Broadway and in early television, and retiring to a quiet, contemplative life surrounded by good friends. In 1971 I had the privilege of becoming acquainted with David through the mail, an acquaintance that quickly developed into a close friendship that lasted the rest of his life.
