A concussion is normally caused by a blow to the head although it can also occur when the head and upper body are shaken violently. Concussions are not classified as life threatening although they may cause both short term and long term effects. Such effects may include headaches, memory loss, balance loss as well as disturbance in vision. There are different types of concussions:Simple Concussions: These are very common in children and adolescents. They are mild and resolve within a week to 10 days. These concussions rarely result in serious complications or long term health risks.Complex Concussions: These result in more persistent symptoms and can seriously affect the brain functions. People who suffer from this type are at a high risk of complications such as bleeding or swelling of the brain, seizures as well as post-concussion symptoms (dizziness, blurred vision, persistent headaches etc.). Severe and multiple concussions are classified as complex.Concussion can also be classified according to grade:Grade 1: This is mild and does not lead to the loss of consciousness. People who sustain this grade may be dazed or confused for a short period that does not exceed 15 minutes. They completely recover after 20 minutes.Grade 2: It is moderate and does not lead to the loss of consciousness. However, its symptoms last for more than 20 minutes. People who sustain this grade may not remember the injury, a condition referred to as post-traumatic amnesia.Grade 3: It is the most severe type and leads to the loss of consciousness. The patient does not remember what happened before or after the injury.ContusionThis is another type of brain injury that is considered to more serious than concussion. A concussion usually results in a simple brain disturbance and no brain damage. A contusion, on the other hand, results in a deep bruising of the brain and can lead to hemorrhaging. If the two conditions occur together, the patient lapses into unconsciousness. In a contusion, there is multiple microhemorrhages where small blood vessels leak into the brain. They can be minor with few symptoms or very severe where patients spend some time unconscious following an injury. Other major symptoms associated with contusion include memory loss, attention problems, numbness, emotional disturbances and loss of speaking ability.Coup-Countrecoup InjuriesThese are type of injuries associated with contusion brain injury where the brain is bruised. A coup injury occurs just under the site of the injury while a countercoup injury occurs on the side opposite the injured area.
