Here in America it is common to think of faeries as small, winged creatures that would be called elemental sylphs or nature spirits in other cultures. In Ireland faeries are equated with the Sidhe who are more like gods and goddesses, or the elves of Tolkien novels.Elementals are the nature spirits of the elements:sylphs are air spiritsgnomes are earth spiritsundines are water spiritssalamanders are fire spiritsThere are also huge Fomorian and Titanic beings, sometimes called devas or gods, of mountains, oceans, forests, and continents, as well as weather spirits that orchestrate winds and rain. These are all included in the faery realm. Nature spirits inhabit every aspect of nature, from tiny flowers to massive oak trees, stones, and rivers.To make matters even more confusing, all faeries are energy beings and therefore they can shift their appearance to any form they choose. An old hag can suddenly appear as a beautiful, young woman. A flower fairy can appear as a sparkle at the corner of your eye or a floating globe.So, you can see how challenging it is to give a definition of the word “faery.” Never the less, for the purposes of this website, I will include all Otherworld beings of Earth and Nature under the umbrella of faery.What Otherworld?The Otherworlds are various dimensions of reality that exist at faster or higher vibrations than our material dimension. The faery realm, elfland, or fairyland is a dimension very close to ours and there is a lot of overlap, particularly in some places.
