F H D S What We Do Who We Are Dr. B Current Opportunities Contact Us F H D S The impact of stress from loss, poverty, violence, discrimination, severe accidents, life-threatening illness, or natural disasters is toxic, and the implications for this on children and families are profound. Current and emerging research in neuroscience, psychology, and epigenetics shows that persistent stress can lead to higher rates of depression, obesity, substance abuse, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, maladaptive social behavior, and other chronic ills.[1] Persistent toxic stress in children can influence brain development and impair the development of coping mechanisms; trigger mental illness; and delay learning.[2] Toxic stress places an enormous burden on children and families, and taxes the resources of communities, schools, prisons, and public service agencies as they attempt to mitigate and lift those burdens.[3] Family Health Delivery Systems, Inc., (FHDS) founded by renowned child psychiatrist Mathieu Bermingham, MD, is uniquely positioned to provide expert clinical care and delivery of services to the Commonwealth’s most vulnerable populations. We are a clinical practice that focuses on strengthening the nucleus of today’s families by addressing the stress and trauma that impacts their daily lives. We are focused on early childhood mental well being by offering top-notch clinical care and engaging the entire family in a process of discovery and healing. [1] Shonkoff JP, Garner AS. (2012).
