Skip to main content The Global Dimension in Engineering Education Resources and insights for global dimension Main menuHome Events Resources Project team and Partners Experts/consultants The Global Dimension Engineers face an increasingly complex world, in which large intractable problems such as poverty, sustainability and economic crises merge with increased globalisation. Engineering graduates will need to be able to work in multidisciplinary, multicultural teams to both assess needs and co-create solutions with local and global communities. This three-year project (July 2009 – June 2012) is co-ordinated by Engineers Against Poverty and supported by UKaid from the Department for International Development. The project aims are to build the knowledge and understanding of the challenges and prospects for development amongst academic staff and enable them, through embedding global issues in the curriculum, to impart this knowledge and understanding to engineering undergraduates. Academics will be equipped to help undergraduates understand that for engineering knowledge to be effective, it must be integrated into the social, economic and institutional aspects of development and that they must join their knowledge with that of other specialists through interdisciplinary approaches. The project team and partners The project team brings together the leading organisations in the UK responsible for curriculum review, professional development and accreditation in engineering education to focus on global issues. Five universities are working with the project to strengthen the commitment and capacity of engineering departments to embed global issues into the learning of engineering undergraduates. This work will build on the report: The Global Engineer – Incorporating global skills within UK higher education of engineers which presents a framework of approaches for embedding global skills into the engineering curriculum and highlights examples from current practice to illustrate these approaches in action. A Global Dimension for Engineering Education events The Engineering Subject Centre is responsible for the organisation of events run by the project. An holistic programme of workshops for engineering academics, related to the framework and linking to the requirements for the accreditation of degrees, will be held during the academic year 2010 – 2011 in locations across the UK. The interactive workshops will be thematically unique but will have a common thread of developing a negotiated understanding of the global dimension of engineering education. Resources from the Project Resources from the project arising from the workshops are now available. These include: Teaching resources to use with students (including case studies) Guides for academics and case studies that demonstrate teaching globalisation in the engineering curriculum Reports and briefing papers Research papers Links to relevant websites For more information please contact: Petter Matthews
