Little known places that we should know about and consider visiting.Calf Creek Recreational AreaNestled in southern Utah is a little known Bureau of Land Management (BLM) campground known as Calf Creek. From Escalante, Utah go east 15 miles on Utah State Road 12. Located among sandstone cliffs, this quaint little campground's main attraction is a trail that leads to a 126 foot waterfall. The trail is fairly level and travels along rock and sand beside Calf Creek.Along the way on this 2.75 mile hike (round trip 5.5 miles) you see Anasazi petroglyphs and storage rooms that are fascinating. You sign in at the trailhead and there is a small trail guide that explains the total area back to the falls including plant life and wildlife. The trail is level but is sandy and can be strenuous, especially in summer.This is a fantastic area to see while in the area of Bryce Canyon and Capital Reef National Parks in southern Utah. Just east of Bryce Canyon National Park on State Road 20 there are some great areas to see. Just before the town of Escalante is Escalante Petrified Forest State Park. About 15 miles east of Escalante, is where Calf Creek Campgrounds and Recreational area is located.The campground is fully operational 01 Apr through 31 Oct each year. Day use group reservations are accepted during this time. RV, Large Vehicle or Low Clearance Vehicle Information
It is possible to turn a trailer around in the main parking area, or by driving around the campground loop. The campground loop makes a ford crossing through Calf Creek which normally does not present a problem for most vehicles and trailers, but may be a problem for some low clearance or oversized vehicles or trailers. Vehicles over 25 feet are not recommended.
