Photo: Jason South JPSA quarter of Tony Abbott’s frontbench is now embroiled in the expenses scandal after Immigration Minister Scott Morrison and Assistant Minister for Defence Stuart Robert repaid taxpayer funds used to attend a colleague’s wedding. With six frontbenchers, including the Prime Minister, involved in taxpayer-funded nuptial trips, the total charge to taxpayers for the Coalition’s wedding attendances is more than $16,000.Only a quarter of this has been refunded. About $12,000 of the total includes ”study tour” entitlements claimed by three MPs to return home from the Indian wedding of Gina Rinehart’s business partner – an expense they say is legitimate.Mr Morrison, who opposed the Gillard government flying asylum seekers to the funerals of family members who had drowned at sea, said his wedding claim was an honest mistake. He explained the slip-up in a private letter to Sydney radio host Ray Hadley, on whose program the Immigration Minister regularly appears. In his letter to Hadley, Mr Morrison explained that he had ”incorrectly and inadvertently claimed one nights [sic] travel allowance in October 2011, on the date of a colleague’s wedding”. On Friday, Mr Morrison repaid $354 to the Department of Finance. After Mr Morrison refunded the wedding costs, Fairfax Media checked the records and found that the Assistant Minister for Defence, Mr Robert, had also claimed $354 for the same night’s accommodation.Asked if Mr Robert attended the Melbourne wedding, his spokesman replied: ”Mr Robert attended a meeting on October 21, 2011, in his capacity as the then shadow minister for defence science, technology and personnel.”He also attended a wedding on the same day. To avoid any ambiguity, Mr Robert has paid back the costs for accommodation for the night of 21 October, 2011.”The 2011 wedding Mr Morrison attended is understood to have been that of the West Australian Liberal MP Steve Irons. According to news reports, Mr Irons threw his wedding party at Melbourne’s Crown Casino on October 21, 2011, the night Mr Morrison ”inadvertently” claimed travel allowance. On the Ray Hadley Morning Show earlier in the week, Mr Morrison had denied claiming expenses such as weddings, but in the letter the minister said that at the ”time of responding” he was ”not aware of this claim, and answered truthfully to the best of my recollection”.Explaining why he had chosen to reveal the mistake via a private letter to Hadley, the Immigration Minister wrote: ”I thought it was important to let you know about these events as I have always had
