Then there is the added risk of asking for outside help and getting ripped off. There are a few methods a painter can work out a realistic price before he or she becomes famous. A good start is to visit galleries and find oil paintings which can be seen as the same level so-to-speak. Look at the prices and get some idea of how much they are asking. The main thing is to find a structure that makes sense; once a good structure has been established then pricing will come quite easily. Many artists find a solid structure by basing a price on measurements; taking into consideration if a frame is included because it should be added to the price. Another good place to get some guidelines is calculating how much the materials cost. It’s very important to price any oil painting after the cost of the paint and canvas has been added. The last thing any artist want is to spend more than he or she makes. Speak to fellow artists who have been in the business because their knowledge can prove invaluable. There aren’t any set ways to go around pricing paintings and for some structures are definitely needed due to the lack of confidence. Keep in mind that a beautiful painting will have different values depending on different people. One customer might regard oil paintings for sale as daylight robbery while others won’t have any problem paying the price. In any event, don’t get discouraged.
