Photo courtesy Robb WhitlaSometime between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. after a busy Saturday of great March riding conditions, Robb Whitla got a call informing him that the small cabin he built off a glade run at Camp Fortune had been torched. “I guess they had big balls to do it in the middle of the daytime,” said Whitla of the unknown miscreants.Whitla, who designs bike trails for Camp Fortune in the summer, built the shed four years ago from a bike jump when he noticed it could be used for another purpose. “[I noticed that the jump] looks like the roof of a cabin,” he said.Besides fulfilling dreams of riding off the roof of a structure on a bike, the shed made of cedar wood planks was a friendly sight for anyone with the guts to cut through the trees on their skis or snowboard in the winter at Camp Fortune. Joel Balsam photoDuring the night of March 19, a sign was posted over Chelsea’s hottest new restaurant to notify the community that, after five months of preparation, Mamma Teresa’s would finally be having its grand opening. The next day, just an hour before the hungry and excited dinner rush started to pour in, the Low Down was there to experience the vibe. Here’s what you need to know before you dig into your noodles at Mamma Teresa’s first expansion since opening in Ottawa 43 years ago.Co-owner Walter Moreschi did his homework. He knows that when a business moves into Chelsea, residents want to see it fit in with the culture, not take away from it. “It’s a perfect fit because it’s not a franchise … it has the same integrity of Chelsea,” he said.To ensure that the resto maintains the “coziness” of Chelsea, “Everything … is from Chelsea,” he said. The staff are all from Chelsea, local ingredients are used when possible, and the candles placed in the centre of each table are from Bougie Doozy Candle just around the corner. Moreschi even had the grand opening kept secret until the last minute, so it would be people from Chelsea who would get to try the food first, not tourists
