I Sewed Something
I sewed something, Internet. And I had fun doing it, which is likely the remarkable part. I’ve tried sewing in the past and it’s always ended in tears of frustration. You know what I discovered while doing this? The right tools make all the difference.
I took this class with some of my work pals and I was pretty nervous about it. When I’ve tried sewing in the past, it’s just…not good. Not pretty. Not cute. Not anything. Just maddening. But we went to Modern Domestic and took a class. And we got to use their wonderful machines and the woman actually explained why and how to work the machines. It was a revelation.
We measured out the fabric, which for me was the most challenging part. I think I have some sort of block in my brain with spacial relationships. I was trying to measure out the fabric and cutting and all of that and when it was explained to me for the 10th time, I didn’t get it any better than I got it the first time. I just couldn’t understand it. But once I had (a lot) of help measuring out a total of four squares and two rectangles (see, mental block) I got to work sewing. The bag is lined and we did this cool thing with the bottom two corners to give it a bottom.
I’m super excited about it. For my next bag, I’m going to add a pocket, perhaps some interfacing to make it stiffer and a little ribbon and a button so it can be closed.
And I’m totally going to make another one. Or maybe two. And then I’m going to learn how to make some clothes.

Apple Picking!
Wow, Internet, where have I been? I’ve been to San Francisco twice and Austin once and I’m very excited to be going to Portugal with my husband in a few days. I’ve also been in Portland doing nothing. One Sunday, I did nothing. I just lazed around and read. It was totally amazing.
This Sunday we went apple picking in Hood River. When we were in Hood River, Fancyhats told me he’d like to live there when we’re older. Fancyhats also changed my oil, changed my windshield wipers and made all of our food all weekend. He’s romantic and pretty much an amazing man. Attention dudes: if you’re not changing the oil for a lady, get on that. It’s pretty romantic.
Anyway, we went apple picking. We did an apple tasting and tried about 30 types of apples.
I don’t love apples. I think because I grew up eating red delicious and those things are nasty. Disgusting. Ick. So I’m hesitant about apples. But we tried many different kinds and discovered a few that we liked. I also tried red delicious from Oregon. Organic, heirloom quality. And it was so good.
We took home several varieties including some jumbos. Those are two of the jumbos. The green was very good, the red had that mealy texture that makes me sort of gag when I eat apples.
