I am Charlie Thorne, MD, a Plastic Surgeon in New York, with 25 years of experience in the surgical correction of microtia. Although this website is devoted to microtia, my experience is in the surgical correction of ear deformities of all types including prominent ears, excessively large ears, ears with aging changes or earring complications, deformities related to trauma (e.g. burns, dog bites, etc), cancer or previous facelifting, and congenital ear anomalies such as Stahl’s ear, cryptotia, question mark ear or microtia and aural atresia. You may also wish to explore my other website, www.otoplasty.org. The surgical correction of microtia is a highly specialized part of plastic surgery. There are less than a handful of surgeons in the world with equivalent expertise and experience in ear reconstruction. Having performed all types of ear reconstruction including both autogenous reconstruction (using the patient’s own cartilage) and reconstruction using artificial, plastic materials such as porous polyethylene (Medpor), I recommend using natural tissue (cartilage) whenever possible.
