Coding Mistakes Beginners Should Avoid
Programming enables you to understand a language that will be more valuable in the long run. However, learning how to code isn’t a walk in the park. Many people get frustrated early on and never continue their lessons.
If you’re new to coding, these are the most common mistakes you should be wary of.
Newbies’ Coding Mistakes
1) Bad Formatting
Learning a programming language becomes more comfortable if you know how to organize the code. What sets an amateur from a professional is how the latter knows how to keep their code in order. After all, coding relies on logical frameworks.
Do not ignore proper indentation. Similarly, understand when you should take note of the white space. Many people develop apathy toward proper formatting because of languages that aren’t strict about it.
For example, JavaScript will work as long as you type in the correct code — it does not care about your inconsistent use of new lines. The problem is that beginners will get confused.
A novice in programming should take advantage of tabbing and spacing. This will save time since they don’t have to look for curly braces continually.
2) Inconsistent Capitalization
Beginners should be wary of how they use uppercase and lowercase letters. Not all languages demand case-sensitive coding, but it’s best to start early in practicing consistency.
Variables and functions should have the same capitalization all throughout. Otherwise, you might end up wondering why your code isn’t running.
3) Not Having Backup Copies
Similar to how one should always save a Microsoft Word document whenever possible, it pays to have copies of your code. Include different versions so that you can return to older variants that run well compared to the latest one.
There are a lot of applications for creating backup copies. Just have a stable internet connection, and you’re good to go. If you’re asking “Why is my VPN so slow?” while creating your backup, it probably has to do with your ISP since having a VPN only reduces the speed by a meager amount.
4) Ignoring the Importance of Naming
Beginners often want to do things the fast way. However, this can cause them problems later on. Instead of making your variable and function names incredibly short, try to make them distinct and descriptive.
When you use longer names, you reduce the chances of having similar variables and functions by accident. This simple error can eventually break the code.
Coding isn’t easy, but you can manage its difficulty if you avoid making the mistakes mentioned above.
