reactor.orgthe personal blog of trevor spicer DNS Provider SwitchBy trevor on December 7, 2013 We don’t host our own DNS server for Internet traffic and our previous provider (an IT consulting firm we’ve retained for almost a decade) had some major problems a few weeks ago for which they haven’t explained themselves. Thus, as of last night, we’ve moved on to a professional DNS host. Posted in EduIT | Leave a response ERB Testing & Macbook Pro SSLBy trevor on November 9, 2013 We concluded ERB testing this week and while all of the students were able to complete the tests the process was not without major headaches. ERB appears to contract with CTP for online testing. Our school has used online ERB testing for the past several years with no problems. Also, we have a 1:1 laptop program and use laptops extensively on a daily basis; we are very confident in our network infrastructure and our ability to support tests of this nature. Tests are facilitated via a web console accessible via HTTPS. Students take tests via the “ERB Secure Browser” which is an app that (in a nutshell) when executed closes all open apps, expands to full screen (via non-standard methods), and then uses Safari on the back-end to access content via HTTPS on the CTP servers. It has always felt kind of kludgy. I’d feel better if it were a vanilla HTTPS connection via Safari without all the extra cruft around it. Either that or a better app that had some IT-configurable options with better management controls. We encountered a particular problem where SSL traffic to CTP servers from Macbook Pros (2010-2012 models) was VERY slow. This included both the ERB Secure Browser as well as HTTPS access by Test Administrators through their laptops. SSL traffic to other websites was unaffected. Operating system version did not seem to have an effect. All guidelines in the CTP FAQ were followed. Users with other types of Macbooks (Airs and newer Pros) were unaffected and in fact performed very well. Next week we will start digging into the issue, hopefully with CTP. My hunch is that there is something with the way that (older) Macbook Pros deal with SSL that wasn’t playing nice with CTP’s environment. Posted in EduIT | Tagged ERB SSL testing | Leave a response Bandwidth UpgradeBy trevor on October 1, 2013 This week we quietly “upgraded” the Internet bandwidth available to the school. By “upgraded” I mean that we negotiated more bandwidth for less cost – no hardware was changed and we didn’t even need to do anything on our side of the network. In fact the “upgrade” was simply a few changes on our ISP’s router. Zero downtime and immediate, noticeable improvements for everyone on campus. Each 3-5 years we are able to renew our arrangement with our provider and unlike soaring bandwidth costs in the consumer market, we get more bang for our buck each cycle. The school currently h
