"No group of settlers in America was so ill-fitted by experience and equipment to cope with the wilderness as this little band of peasants, town laborers and shopkeepers; yet none came through their trials so magnificently." — Samuel Eliot Morison Constance Flynn Lagerman (1922-2012) Constance Flynn Lagerman, 90, of Bryn Mawr, a former board member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Ardmore, died Saturday, Sept. 29, at her home.Mrs. Lagerman was on the church's executive committee for more than five decades and served as a reader and Sunday school teacher, her son, Richard, said.Born in Haverford, she attended what was then Harcum Junior College.The daughter of William S. Flynn, architect of several golf courses in the Philadelphia region, Mrs. Lagerman in recent years presented the winner's trophy at the annual Flynn Cup tournament, which takes place at a different course each year, her son said.Mrs. Lagerman was an obedience trainer at the Philadelphia Dog Training Club in the 1950s and a competitor with her standard poodle at shows in the region in that decade, her son said.She was a longtime staff member at the Little House Shop, a gift store now in Wayne. "She was a young girl when she first started there," he said, and worked "one day a week into her 80s."She was a governor of the Society of Mayflower Descendants in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1991-92.Besides her son, Mrs. Lagerman is survived by nephews. Her husband, Joseph F. Jr., died in 2005. Their daughter, Suzanne Carraccia, died in 2007.A life celebration was set for 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Stuard Funeral Home, 104 Cricket Ave., Ardmore, before an 11 a.m. memorial service there.
