In these cases the visual modeler may focus more on capture while the facilitator focuses on guiding the group. This division of labor often aids the problem solving process. The visual modeler can develop better and more drawings, faster and with greater creativity. Often when a visual modeler also facilitates, they rely on pre-drawn or mental templates complete with a set of standard iconography. This is a great way to speed visual capture of ideas while retaining requisite focus on the content of the discussion.Search the internet or YouTube for references to graphic recording to find a host of practitioners, examples and in-depth skill development. I will only provide a few high-level hints here.I prefer to draw on large sheets of paper (up to 8′ long by 4′ tall) or foam board. When I draw on paper I either post it on a permanent wall or attach it to large foam boards propped on easels. I prefer not to use easel pad paper. By the time letters are scaled up to an inch high or so, a sheet of standard easel pad paper is effectively smaller in scale than a sheet of letter or A4 paper. There isn’t enough room to create. However, I may have easel pads off to the side to take notes on. I may use post-it notes if I feel that the elements of the conversation will require constant rearrangement. I may use a large marker board surface, if available, to add more flexibility.The first thing I had to learn about capturing conversations visually in front of a group was relaxed attention. Anxiety shuts down the creative process: fear of missing something practically guarantees missing much. I think of myself as a simultaneous translator. Ideas flow into my ears and out through my hand. This requires focus–more focus on listening than on drawing.I capture words first. Sometimes words and lines to connect or encircle them are all I capture. I’m striving to build an illustration that not only captures what is said but more importantly answers the questions, “how does the system work; how is the system put together; what behaviors does the system produce and why?” If I miss key words because I’m drawing a picture of a gorilla I may have lost major elements of the composition. It’s like drawing from real life in nature except through the window of a speeding train.If I miss something I either let it go or ask the group to repeat it. Getting permission to interact with the group up front is important, otherwise the interruption may distract the group and cause it to lose track. If the facilitator and visual modeler act as co-facilitators from the beginning, this facilitates such dialog for clarification. As the model
