Development in and around Atlanta demands more and more water for northern Georgia, depriving the downstream communities of the fresh water so vital to the health of rivers and estuaries. The dire consequences predicted by scientists two decades ago are now coming to pass: the oyster population in Apalachicola Bay has drastically declined. This past year saw a record low level in the Apalachicola River stretching for nine months. Third- and fourth-generation fishermen are unable to earn a living the only way they know how. And the availability of fresh Gulf seafood for the rest of us is in danger.Congressional and state leaders in Florida are alarmed and hoping for a legislative solution to the water war. Given the history to date, however, it doesn’t look good.Posted in Ecology of the Gulf, Fishing News, What's being talked aboutMay242013 Red Snapper Limits IncreasedBy Seafood Lover on May 24, 2013Great news!!
