A Thai visa is one of, if not the, most important documents for an expat or traveler in Thailand. Generally, a validly issued Thai visa acts as the foundation for all later endeavors in the Kingdom of Thailand. One cannot apply for a Thai work permit without a proper Thai visa. A foreigner cannot open a bank account in Thailand without a visa. Thai Permanent Residence requires at least three years of unbroken visa status before a prospective Permanent Resident’s application will even be accepted, let alone approved. Most of those who obtain a Thai visa apply for their travel document outside of the Kingdom of Thailand. A Thai visa is usually obtained after submitting a well-founded application to a Royal Thai Consulate or Embassy abroad. After the visa is received the bearer has approximately 6 months to use the visa or else it will expire, unless something is otherwise noted upon the travel document itself. 
Many are under the mistaken impression that obtaining a Thai visa is easier in Thailand. For the most part, this is not the case as those in their home country generally have a better chance of obtaining a long term visa. In South East Asia, most posts will not issue a visa valid for more than 90 days. That being said, different visa categories have different validity periods. For example, a Thai tourist visa usually provides 60 days of lawful status to the bearer. This period can be augmented by applying for a Thai visa extension at a local Thai immigration office. That being said, such extensions are only granted based upon the Immigration officer’s discretion.
Thai visa categories can be confusing to those unaccustomed to dealing with the Immigration process. Currently, one of the most popular visas utilized by foreigners in Thailand is the Thai Business visa. A common misconception about this visa is that it confers the right to work in the Kingdom of Thailand. A Thai business visa does not provide the bearer with the right to work. Instead, it provides the bearer with the opportunity to enter the Kingdom of Thailand for business related purposes: meetings, seminars, conferences, transaction of legal matters, etc. The bearer of this visa is entitled to apply for a Thai work permit.
Another popular visa in Thailand is the ED visa. This visa confers the privilege of remaining in the Kingdom in order to pursue academic endeavors. The retirement visa can be a useful travel document for retirees in the Kingdom of Thailand, but the retirement visa specifically precludes employment in Thailand.
