Financial assets are considered abandoned 
when contact with 
owners or heirs is lost - typically due to a name change after 
marriage or divorce, an unreported address change or expiration of a 
postal forwarding order, because of incomplete or illegible records, 
and most often upon death of a family member.The period of time that must pass before funds 
are considered unclaimed - the dormancy period - is set by 
law. It varies with the type of property involved, but generally runs 
one to five years. The most common

Government benefit checks and refunds;

Royalty payments, trust funds, deposits 
and escrow accounts.
If, at the end of the dormancy period, there has 
been no owner directed activity, those holding the monies - insurance 
companies, banks and credit unions, brokers, mutual funds, employers, 
courts, unions and government agencies themselves - transfer it to 
a trust account under a legal doctrine known as escheat. Here 
it awaits your claim.
Family members often are unaware they’re eligible to collect 
unclaimed moneys, refunds and benefits owed deceased relatives who 
passed on without leaving an updated will or complete financial records. 
Billions of dollars in life insurance payments and retirement benefits 
are never claimed, for example, because it is up to heirs to notify life 
insurance underwriters and retirement account custodians when an owner 
dies, and little effort is made to track down lost beneficiaries.
