Web Health Health Information on a Variety of Health Issues Facts About STDs February 5th, 2009 There is a growing awareness about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). If you are on the verge of becoming sexually active, it is about time that you find out more about these diseases first so you can take the right precautions. What are STDs? STDs may be alternatively called sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Some people and medical professionals may prefer to use STIs as a term because the term “diseases” carry negative connotations. Some may have sexually transmitted infections without appearing sick or diseased. Obviously, you can get an STD primarily through sexual contact. Vaginal, oral and anal sex are all avenues for transmission. Some STDs however can be transmitted through skin contact and can even be passed from a pregnant woman to her child. There are many different kinds of STIs and they have different causes. Some such as gonorrhea, Chlamydia, and syphilis are brought about by strains of bacteria. Others like HPV, herpes and HIV are caused by viruses. Anyone who becomes sexually active is at risk of getting an STD. Those however who have multiple partners and who do not use condoms are at a higher risk. STD Symptoms Since there are various kinds of STDs, there are also different symptoms. Men for example may suspect having gonorrhea if they feel a burning sensation while urination and if there is a whitish discharge from the penis. Herpes on the other hand may be made obvious by blisters near the genital area. It is important to know though that not anyone who has an STD will immediately show symptoms. Some may have an infection for many years and not know about it because of the absence of signs and symptoms. It is also possible to have a set of non-definite symptoms. If this is so, consider seeing a doctor to have your condition diagnosed immediately. Some symptoms to be aware of include pain during urination, pain during intercourse, genital discharges, lumps, sores, flu-like symptoms and fatigue. You may or may not have an STD but you should rather find out if you do or you don’t. Treatment for STD STDs caused by bacteria can be dealt with by taking antibiotics. Early detection and treatment is crucial though to prevent complications. STDs however that are caused by viruses cannot be cured completely. Medications available for these STD types are intended only to manage the infection. Herpes medication for example can make outbreaks less frequent, less painful and shorter in duration. The herpes virus however will only lie dormant in an infected person’s system after medication and come out again at another time. STD Prevention Condoms do not provide 100% protection against STDs. They are however, effective to some extent. The best way however to truly avoid getting infected is stick to a monogamous relationship. Be wary too of new partners. Take the time to know someone before having sex with him or he
